Tangrams: This is an optional, but fun activity to try at home, and is self explanatory: link . The 4th graders did this today in math, but it is a challenging activity for all ages (see description below).

Opportunities for enrichment:
A parent recently let us know about some exciting opportunities in math and science for students outside of school.

• Tomorrow, Saturday, March 10 is the Julia Robinson Math Festival at Head-Royce School from 1:00-4:00 p.m. You can learn more about this fun event to inspire kids in mathematics and register here.
• Society for Women Engineers host periodic SWE Science Saturdays from 10am-12pm for 4th and 5th graders. More information about these events and sign-ups are here. There is one tomorrow, and more in early April.
• Engineering for Kids Day at UC Berkeley is on Saturday, March 17 from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. It is completely FREE and includes lunch for students, but a parent or guardian must accompany the student throughout the day. You can register at e4k.berkeley.edu. Spots will fill up so register soon!

4th Grade Blue and Purple Groups: Today we worked together as one class. The students were led in a demonstration to make Tangrams from a 4"x4" square of paper by folding and cutting. The outcome is seven polygons: different sized triangles, a square and a parallelogram. The challenge is to put the pieces back together to form the original square. Many students eventually found a solution and moved on to other Tangram polygon puzzles. This is a great activity to try at home for adults and kids alike.
