Fourth grade math, Blue Group: No homework assigned tonight. The students continued work in algebra to begin the day, determining the value of variables and how to work with multiple parenthesis at a time. We problem solved how to determine area and perimeter of rectangles when only given the length and width, but not picture or diagram to work with. This required thinking through, sketching diagrams and remembering when to multiply and when to add. Next, following a demonstration, the students determined the area of various polygons by breaking them into sections of determinable values. This required discovering the formula for determining the area of a triangle (1/2 the length x width if it were a rectangle). The students did a terrific job developing efficient methods for this work.
Purple group: Students practiced measuring and drawing angles with polygons and protractors for our warm up today. Then we played some games, sorting shapes by different properties, and practiced measuring perimeter and area, in preparation for our geometry
assessment tomorrow.
