4th graders learned a new game, called How Long? How Many? The object of the game was to construct arrays using Cuisinaire rods that would cover the greatest amount of space. Students also tackled some more array picture problems and completed an assessment.
5th graders considered what the factors of 12 tell us about the factors of 120, or the factors of 15 about 150. They worked more with prime factorization, and today's problems were writing-based. Their homework tonight is again based on factors and multiples.
Strawberry students watched in wonder as an aluminum can crushed in on itself when dunked in a bowl of water. They practiced their observation skills and recording skills, carefully noting the materials and procedures, asking questions, and making hypotheses. Students are currently thinking of experiments to test the prevailing idea, that sudden pressure from outside the can crushed it.
Candle lantern and cannon ball in hand, Ivan Kuskov, the first manager of Fort Ross (1812) paid a visit to the classroom today to inspect his new group of recruits, the Strawberry students. He outlined the role group jobs for the students to select from and highlighted some of the special tasks everyone does at Colony Ross, including the night watch. Kuskov plans to stop by at Back to School Night tomorrow evening as well and provide much of the same information for the adults. We are well on out way to establishing the Strawberry Creek version of the Russian American Company.
