4th Grade Math - Decimal Dog (activity to introduce decimal numbers). Today the 4th graders participated in a group activity called, Decimal Dog. This is an activity designed to introduce/reintroduce decimal numbers and corresponding place value. Half of the students were assigned digits to represent in decimal numbers read aloud by another student. The other half of the class simultaneously write the decimal number called out l on white boards. The student with digits place themselves accordingly around Decimal Dog who holds the decimal point ("and") in his mouth. Everyone confirms the answer. We began with tenths and eventually with mixed numbers including thousandths. Students with the digits had to be careful as they moved to their spots. If, they are on the wrong side of Decimal Dog, he might bite!

Puppet Making
We are busy making puppets for our performance on May 23rd. Next week the students will be organized into groups to plan their chapter(s) of a Strawberry version of, By the Great Horn Spoon. We already have many new characters, and have transformed original characters to be slightly different. Earlier in the week the students began writing profiles for their puppet character, and will continue to add to this as we develop the story line for the show.
