Tuesday, October 18

Reminder:
  • Field trip to Mission Dolores this Thursday. Please turn in your permission slips.
  • Sue Diamond will be speaking to parents this coming Monday, October 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Depot about Social Skills. Kate Klaire has been working with all of the students in our class on these social skills this year, so this is a chance to learn more about this program. Please make plans to attend!
Homework:
  • No 4th grade math homework.
  • 5th grade math: Homework is to write a reflection on the first unit. How's math class going so far? What was easy for you this unit? What was most challenging? 1-2 paragraphs in their math notebooks. Due tomorrow.
  • Social studies homework assigned yesterday is due tomorrow.
Math:
Students in fourth grade have been calculating addition and subtraction in preparation for a study of number patterns, using the JUMP math curriculum, which features lots of checking in with students. A few students tried their hand at quite complicated sequences. We also learned a new game, Go Fish Ten, which would be great to play at home for kids working on combinations that add to ten: the rules can be downloaded here. The other game we learned, Blackbeard's Treasure chest, helps students with graphing skills.

Fifth graders took an assessment today as the finale to our first unit. They worked independently on the three-question quiz to show their knowledge of multiplication strategies, factoring, and division strategies.

Spanish:
Students met our short-term substitute Spanish teacher today, Amy Roizen. They shared Spanish words they knew, learned some words for parts of the body, and played a fun game of "baseball" in which they gave the Spanish word for different English words they knew.
