Cultural Studies homework: Students are finishing work started in class about the
colonies.
The Berkeley School is holding a spare change drive for the people affected by Hurricane Sandy. Please feel free to bring in any spare change to add to our classroom jar!
Science: Along with a terrific trip to the UC Botanic garden our science work today included a mini lesson in pollination in flowers and cones. Next, the students used what we learned about so far to create an original plant showing where photosynthesis takes place, the flow of transpiration of water, and reasons for selection of the root structure and leaf shape based on its habitat.

In Math Club we focused on geometry, and the
What's Your Angle problem. A number of students were interested in using repeating number sequences, like (4,5,6), to make
spirographs
on graph paper, and predict what might happen by varying the numbers in
the sequence, the numbers of numbers, or the direction the lines
turned. Many of the patterns were lovely or surprising (or both!).
Another engaging problem involved predicting the number of
diagonals
in a series of polygons, starting with a triangle (0), square (2),
pentagon (5), and hexagon (9). Students noticed a pattern and made
predictions. Our homework is to find out how many diagonals in a
nonagon (with 9 sides), to see if our prediction of 27 is correct.
Finally, some students worked on
number puzzles.
