Mission Dolores is on for Friday!

Home Assignments:
1.
5th Grade Math: Packet - see Cerrito Creek's blog
4th Grade Math: Packet and 7s page:  In class today the students experienced a teaching process from Making Math Real known as the 9 Lines.  This is a visual imaging strategy to learn the times tables one fact family (or house) at a time.  Today the class participated in a whole group experience with this method to learn the 7s, however this process will normally be used to target fact groups students are needing support with, and done in smaller groupings.  The goal today was to familiarize all of the students with this unusual and highly specific method for learning multiplication facts.

2.   Reading (20 min. every night)– Students may read their assigned Book Group books.

3.  Classwork going home to complete by Thursday:
  • Fort Ross Journal:  (Bring journal to school each day too.)  Students are writing from a prompt started in class.
  • California Map:  Some students brought home their California Map last Friday to finish the details of labeling, drawing a compass rose, and including the border lines around the state.  This link has the information they need.
  • Fort Ross Historical Questions:  A student or two needed the historical questions again.  These are all of the questions they have worked on so far, so you will need to compare to what they do and do not have.
Reminder:
Friday, October 25, Mission Dolores Field Trip:
This is a BART and walking trip to the Mission.

Today in Strawberry:  In preparation for our upcoming trip to MIssion Dolores the students watched a short video about the history of the Mission system in California and discussed the probable motivations of the Padres and Native Americans who chose to join in the beginning.  Our BIG ideas today included:  The Mission was more than a church, it was a self sufficient community.  The intentions of the Padres were focused on "saving the souls" of the California Indians.  The high death rate was not an intended outcome.  California Indians had many reasons for joining the missions, or simply were forced to by soldiers.  It is a complicated time in history, as are most.  Tomorrow we will role play scenarios to delve into the various perspectives of the different roles people played at the missions.
