4th Grade Math: Multiplication problems (option 1 & option 2) and Wednesday's multiplication flash card assignment (Fact Cards and practice guidelines for each day of the week).
Wordly Wise: Students should work for at least 15 minutes on the lesson they are currently on in Wordly Wise.
We have an earlier than usual Step-Up Day tomorrow from 9-11am. This is when the students visit their next grade classroom. The 5th graders go to Wild Cat, 4th graders stay in Strawberry and are joined by 3rd graders from Sweet Briar.
A highlight today was our Buddy Time, making board games! Camera batteries ran out, so no photos today.

4th Grade Math Homework: Missing Factors and Tuesday's multiplication flash card assignment (Fact Cards and practice guidelines for each day of the week).
Writing Homework: Ten minute quick write in writer's book (or type and print out). Choose your writing prompt. Writing should be in paragraph form (indent, topic sentence, detail sentences and conclusion).
1. What would you do if you were invisible for a day?
2. What super power would you want and why?
Students in Math Club continued pursuing logic problems of increasing complexity today. Some students figured out a strategy to win a new game, Race to 20, and others enjoyed some puzzles and problems featuring some of our math club students' names. Finally, a few students looked at some interesting geometry problems predicting the results of folding and cutting paper. Next week: algebra and pattern finding!
Historical Fiction Book Groups: Today the students were assigned their book club jobs: Discussion Leader, Illustrator, Passage Master & Summarizer.
Science: We continued our work with electricity this afternoon exploring motors, switches, conductors and insulators. The students tested objects around the room with a conductor detector.

Electricity and Book Clubs

*Drivers have already signed up on the class Wiki, however if you are available as a back up driver, please let us know on the form.
Today we started our study of electricity. To prepare for our field trip to the Exploratorium next Thursday, we will be investigating electricity through a series of experiments this week. Our first experiment focused on lighting a small light bulb with two wires and a D-cell battery. Students were asked to explore how to make their light bulb light up with the given materials.
After successfully lighting the light bulbs, we took away a wire and figured out how to light it using only one wire.
Finally, students were given free reign of the materials and created their own circuits.
This afternoon we divided into our Historical Fiction Book Groups. There are six different groups and each group will be reading one of the following books:

Happy Thanksgiving!
There is no homework over the Thanksgiving break.
We had a wonderful day celebrating things that we're thankful for and baking apple pies. We spent the early afternoon peeling, coring, and cutting apples. We rolled out the dough that we made yesterday and filled the pies with the apples, cinnamon, and sugar and in the oven they went!
After lunch we read the book Giving Thanks and discussed all the things that we are thankful for. After brainstorming together as a class, we split up and wrote a chain of thanks-- strips of paper linked together with our thanks written on them.
We celebrated the end of the day by eating pie and linking our thanks chains together.
Have a wonderful break and a great Thanksgiving! See you on Monday!

Math: Finish division story problems.
Spare Change Drive for Hurricane Sandy Relief
In this time of gratitude, our Student Council has organized a Spare Change collection for Superstorm Sandy Relief. Our school will be contributing backpacks of books and notebooks to New York classrooms devastated by the disaster through the Literacy Lifeboats program. Students may bring in their spare change through Friday, November 30.
In math we furthered our study of division through the story "The Doorbell Rang". Starting with 12 cookies, children figure out how to share the cookies evenly. As more and more people come, the cookie to person ration goes down. Thankfully, at the end, Grandma comes with a full tray of cookies! Students were then asked to create their own story, reminiscent of "The Doorbell Rang". They will be finishing their story for homework this evening.
During Writer's Workshop, students finished their plant research and working on Words Their Way. We also made six pie crusts (yes, six!) for our apple pie baking project tomorrow.
