Homework Reminder
Strawberry Who Homework -
Due Tomorrow! This is an important assignment to write a line/sentence
about each member of our class (similar to an appreciation). The lines
will be used for a collaborative poem composed later. The goal is to write at least one line for each member of our class. The planning sheet is not itself the poem. This is a link to the pink sheet handed out today to help students with writing original lines.
Bring in your Instruments: Eve Decker has been working with the Strawberry students using the instruments they made during the Dresher Project. The students will perform with them at the last day of school assembly on Friday, June 15 at 10:00. Students should bring their instruments to school on Monday and keep them on campus the whole week for rehearsals.

Field trip tomorrow!
Reminders:
We are going to Sutter's Fort and the State Capitol tomorrow morning. Please come to school on time, 8:30 a.m. at the latest, and pick your child up between 4:15-4:30 p.m. Students will simply go to the Extended Day program if their parents aren't there.
Students should bring:
- Filled bottle of water
- Jackets and layers
- Good walking shoes
- Sunscreen
- Hearty snack
- Bag lunch
Scientific Inquiry
Today we discussed the scientific method, and watched 2 StudyJam videos about how scientists create theories and test them, which you can watch here:
Students compared 2 different experiments, to see what makes for a good, reproducible experiment that tests a theory, then created their own experiment with partners to learn more about earthworms. Next week students will get to test their theories out with their hands on experiments.

Late pick up on Thursday, June 7
Reminders:
We have a field trip to Sacramento this Thursday, June 7, to Sutter's Fort and the State Capitol. Many thanks to Beth, Don, Grégoire, Kate, Sophie, and Thomas for stepping up to drive on Thursday, and to Tom for arranging a behind-the-scenes tour of the State Capitol! Students need to bring a snack, lunch, good walking shoes, layers, and will be returning late, between 4:15-4:30 p.m. Thursday. Please arrange to pick up your child at the later time.
Worms!
We started a new unit in science today, focused on student inquiry. After learning about the importance of earthworms, students had a chance to make quantitative and qualitative observations of their own worms today--much excitement ensued! Check out the pictures below.
Tomorrow we will continue by brainstorming questions they have about earthworms, to help guide them towards experiments they can create to answer these questions.
Reader's Theater - The finale of book groups included theatrical readings by the students from sections of their books. Pictures of some groups below.
Fourth grade math
What would you put in your dream house? Students are answering this question, while demonstrating their understanding of some of the main concepts from fourth grade math, with the Dream House Project. They signed their Building Contracts today and started work planning their 4 required rooms (living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom) as well as 1 "special" room. They have financial constraints they must work within, and descriptions of their thinking, both in writing and with numbers and pictures.
Students will be working on this project for homework over the next 2 weeks. You can download the project here and the graph paper here.

- Complete a draft of your floor plan by cutting out the regular rooms and halls (and any “special” rooms) from graph paper (1 unit = 1 foot; 1 square unit = 1 square foot) and taping them together to make your house.
- Record the dimensions, area, and cost on the cutout of each room or hallway.
- Track your budget on the “Budget Update” sheets.
- Complete paragraph 1.

Language Arts
Because of a lovely Strings assembly this morning, put on by our own student Amelia and other musicians in the elementary, we did not have math this morning. Students did work on their "Abuelito Who" poems with their writing partners, and took a spelling assessment during word study. After lunch, small groups made presentations about the books they had read together. We are close to finishing our read aloud book, Maniac Macgee.

Surveying fourth graders
Reminders:

Homework:
Writing: "Abuelito Who" assignment. Rough draft of poem due on Monday. We will work on it in class on Monday too.
All the fourth graders met together in small groups today to conduct surveys of our class. Questions students asked were about favorite colors, books, foods, sports, pets, and subject in school. They tallied results, expressed them as fractions, and represented their results on bar graphs to present to the class. Perhaps not surprisingly, many fourth graders at our school like the color purple, books about magic, pizza and pasta, soccer, dogs, and P.E!
